A knock on the door wakes Joanne (Lauren Phillips) and her husband Nick (Dick Chibbles), who are just getting ready for the night. Avery (Paisley Porter), Lauren's goddaughter, nearly leaps into her arms and starts crying as she responds. Startled, Lauren turns to ask for assistance from the police detective who is with her. Their worlds collide moments later when they discover that Avery's parents—their closest friends—have perished in a horrific vehicle accident. Joanne and Nick are Avery's godparents, therefore even though they aren't related, they will do everything in their power to look after her. However, as time goes on, Nick begins to feel less and less at ease living with Avery. Avery seems to be invading every part of their lives out of selfishness and refusing to give them any privacy. What terrifies Nick even more is that she doesn't even appear to be in mourning. He attempts to talk to Joanne one day because he's concerned that something is wrong with Avery, but Joanne says they have to support her no matter what because this is how she's processing her trauma. Nick acknowledges this with reluctance but says that the inability to spend quality ALONE time with his partner these days is the root of many of his complaints. Maybe they may enjoy a moment to themselves now that Avery has taken a brief break. But are they really alone as things get hotter?
